BEIRUT, LEBANON (2:50 P.M.) – Both the Syrian Arab Air Force (SyAAF) and Syrian Arab Army (SAA) have been working overtime to drive back ISIS militants in and around the strategic city of Deir Ezzor.
Today, the SyAAF targeted ISIS bases and rally points in Deir Ezzor’s Ummal district as well as at the town of Aiyash and in the Panorama area, scoring direct hits.
Furthermore, SAA units besieged in the city have attacked ISIS positions in cemetery area and at the surroundings of the Deir Ezzor Airbase.
Until several days ago, the SAA and its allies in Deir Ezzor had been on the defensive with the sole objective of just trying to inflict as many possible casualties on ISIS ranks. This was due to the generally unfavorable strategic situation pro-government forces there find themselves in and also due to the understanding that army forces in southern Raqqa and eastern Homs were advancing towards the city to lift the siege completely.
However, since a very recent (and very successful) operation by SAA forces in Deir Ezzor which saw them cut the main ISIS line to the cemetery area, the military position of the jihadist group in this area has weakened significantly.
Now a decision has been made by top SAA commanders to resume offensive operations within Deir Ezzor aimed at securing the entire cemetery area from ISIS and re-connecting the government-held parts of the city to the Deir Ezzor Airbase.
Elite Republican Guard unit infiltrates ISIS lines in southern Raqqa

The infiltration attack was carried out almost two days ago and involved the 124th Brigade’s al-Kawaser unit. The operation was approved by two high-ranking commanders of the formation, Brigadier General Nasr Mansour and Major General Asef Ismail.
During the raid, Republican Guard forces infiltrated ISIS lines to a depth of ten kilometers, destroying a Toyota pickup armed with a 23-mm anti-aircraft gun in the process (the technical’s crew was also neutralized as a result).
Two weeks ago, the 124th Special Forces Brigade defended the strategic crossroad town of Resafa from a large ISIS counterattack against its eastern gates. Nonetheless, it appears that the formation is also engaged in front-line offensive operations against ISIS in the province of Raqqa, despite the lack of publicity
