A TEENAGE bell ringer needed rescuing after he was hoisted more than 40ft into the belfry after becoming entangled in his rope.
The 17-year-old was practising with more-experienced bell-ringers when he became stuck in the ropes to one of ten bells at St Helen’s Church in Abingdon, Oxfordshire.
After injuring his ankle and shoulder, he was lowered to the floor by firefighters on Friday and is now recovering at home.
Brian Read, the tower captain, said: ‘It is a very rare occurrence but it can happen. Like any activity it cannot be 100 per cent safe.’
