Assault units of the Syrian Army’s Republican Guard have reportedly seized some 50 percent of the large rebel-held district of Kafr Batna in Damascus’ East Ghouta region.
Some military-affiliated sources reported the advance by government forces just moments ago. If true, the quick gain by Syrian troops may serve to indicate that rebel fighters have abandoned Kafr Batna entirely.
The district is – in terms of its physical size – a rather large and densely built-up residential area, being part of what sources call the rebel-controlled ‘urban heartland’ of East Ghouta.

At the same time, Kafr Batna’s co-joining district of Saqba is being stormed by the Syrian Army’s Tiger Forces Division; no advances have yet been reported on this front.
