This morning Sergio Mattarella, Italy’s president, summoned Carlo Cottarelli, an apolitical economist, to ask him to form an interim cabinet until fresh polls can be held. The president last night vetoed a proposed government made up of the populist Five Star Movement and Northern League parties that together won half the votes in the election on March 4th. Italy now finds itself facing a constitutional crisis, writes our Italy correspondent
