This weekend Moon Jae-in, South Korea’s president, and Kim Jong Un, the North’s leader, met for informal talks that took observers by surprise. The primary purpose of the talks appears to have been to salvage the summit between Mr Kim and Donald Trump, America’s president, scheduled for June 12th. Mr Kim offered no new concessions apart from a renewed commitment to “complete denuclearisation”.

Yet Mr Trump seemed mollified
