The Mexican government said its tariffs would apply to U.S. cranberries, apples, grapes, some pork products and cheeses, and various metal products. European Union officials did not provide a list of U.S. products they would hit with taxes, but they promised a decision would be swift. Canada has also vowed to retaliate for any new restrictions.
The moves mark a rapid escalation in a trade war between the United States and some of its closest foreign allies, with major trading partners retaliating immediately to President Trump’s decision to levy new tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Mexico, Canada and the European Union.
An earlier version of this alert stated that the Mexican government said its tariffs would apply to U.S. blueberries. This alert has been corrected.
