For those of us living in the Northern Hemisphere, this summer serves as a brutal wake-up call, displaying the many ways that runaway human-caused climate disruption has permanently shifted into a permanent emergency.

From record-setting wildfires raging in California as I write this, to the better part of Washington being enveloped in dangerous levels of wildfire smoke, to heat waves across multiple continents killing hundreds of people around the world, to record-breaking high temperatures across the world, the stage has been set for a dystopian future of increasingly chaotic and deadly weather events and the climate is ever-increasingly disrupted.

Meanwhile, there is nothing, and I mean nothing, to indicate that the kind of response required by global governments to even begin to mitigate the crisis will take place.
