SIXTY-THOUSAND heroic British war veterans in the UK are homeless or suffering mental health problems according to a new study.

They are struggling to adjust to civvy life civilian and MPs are failing the brave men and women who have selflessly risked their lives for Queen and Country.

According to the study, over 50,000 are coping with mental health conditions, 10,000 are in prison, on parole or on probation and 6,000 have no permanent address.

“Our research shows that the problem is still rife, and the Government needs to start taking its duty of care seriously,” said a spokesman for the study.

Figures reveal that 25,000 veterans received mental health treatment in 2016-17, but the Mental Health Foundation says only half ask for help, which could mean there are 50,000 former military personnel with mental health issues.

“These veterans were willing to put their lives on the line for their country. That country must take responsibility for their welfare on return.”

A government spokeswoman said: “We are committed to supporting those who struggle.”

The British Legion has estimated that there are currently about 6,000 homeless veterans in the UK.

Interesting comment

‘we need to stop ploughing money into foreign aid and start addressing issues in our own doorstep. we have a crumbling nhs system and police service that is cash strapped. the foreign aid money could be used to address our own crisis’
