British Airways has threatened 12,000 of its workers with redundancy after International Airlines Group, its parent company, announced losses of more than £1.8 billion for the first quarter of the year.
In a shock announcement, the airline said that it expected to take years to recover from the economic and travel disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic and that as a result it was immediately bringing forward plans for a radical restructuring.
It also warned that its operating losses between April and June were expected to be significantly worse.
