The Simpsons has done it again. As die-hard fans pointed out on Thursday, the animated comedy seems to have predicted Sen. Ted Cruz taking a trip to Cancun, Mexico as millions of Texans remain without power and water due to a severe winter storm. If you’re taking cues from The Simpsons‘ Mayor Quimby, you probably need a new role model.

In a 1993 episode of The Simpsons, “Marge in Chains” (Season 4, Episode 21), a virus tears through Springfield, prompting Mayor Quimby to issue a public statement urging residents to stay home. “People of Springfield: Because of the epidemic, I have canceled my vacation to the Bahamas,” he says in a TV address. “I shall not leave the city –“

Before Mayor Quimby can finish his half-hearted statement, a steel drum player walks into the shot, and it becomes clear that he’s giving his address from the beach (he’s even got swim trunks on underneath his suit jacket, giving off business-on-top, party-on-the-bottom vibes). “Hey, you!” Quimby tells the Bahamian beach musician. “Get that steel drum out of the, uh, mayor’s office!”

If you think this situation sounds familiar, you’re not alone. On Thursday, as reports of Texas senator Ted Cruz flying to Cancun with his family were verified, Twitter users highlighted the similarities between The Simpsons‘ 1993 storyline and Cruz’s ongoing fiasco, with one writing, “Damn, The Simpsons even got Ted Cruz.”https://platform.twitter.com/embed/Tweet.html?creatorScreenName=c_spellberg&dnt=true&embedId=twitter-widget-0&frame=false&hideCard=false&hideThread=false&id=1362481878071181315&lang=en&origin=https%3A%2F%2Fdecider.com%2F2021%2F02%2F19%2Fthe-simpsons-predicted-ted-cruz-cancun%2F&siteScreenName=decider&theme=light&widgetsVersion=889aa01%3A1612811843556&width=550pxhttps://platform.twitter.com/embed/Tweet.html?creatorScreenName=c_spellberg&dnt=true&embedId=twitter-widget-1&frame=false&hideCard=false&hideThread=false&id=1362492929978163205&lang=en&origin=https%3A%2F%2Fdecider.com%2F2021%2F02%2F19%2Fthe-simpsons-predicted-ted-cruz-cancun%2F&siteScreenName=decider&theme=light&widgetsVersion=889aa01%3A1612811843556&width=550pxhttps://platform.twitter.com/embed/Tweet.html?creatorScreenName=c_spellberg&dnt=true&embedId=twitter-widget-2&frame=false&hideCard=false&hideThread=false&id=1362484144421310465&lang=en&origin=https%3A%2F%2Fdecider.com%2F2021%2F02%2F19%2Fthe-simpsons-predicted-ted-cruz-cancun%2F&siteScreenName=decider&theme=light&widgetsVersion=889aa01%3A1612811843556&width=550pxhttps://platform.twitter.com/embed/Tweet.html?creatorScreenName=c_spellberg&dnt=true&embedId=twitter-widget-3&frame=false&hideCard=false&hideThread=false&id=1362434898187927559&lang=en&origin=https%3A%2F%2Fdecider.com%2F2021%2F02%2F19%2Fthe-simpsons-predicted-ted-cruz-cancun%2F&siteScreenName=decider&theme=light&widgetsVersion=889aa01%3A1612811843556&width=550pxhttps://platform.twitter.com/embed/Tweet.html?creatorScreenName=c_spellberg&dnt=true&embedId=twitter-widget-4&frame=false&hideCard=false&hideThread=false&id=1362418159001755648&lang=en&origin=https%3A%2F%2Fdecider.com%2F2021%2F02%2F19%2Fthe-simpsons-predicted-ted-cruz-cancun%2F&siteScreenName=decider&theme=light&widgetsVersion=889aa01%3A1612811843556&width=550px

Cruz’s trip to Cancun has dominated the news cycle since photos of him on a Wednesday afternoon flight first surfaced that night. On Thursday afternoon, the senator issued a statement explaining that his daughters “asked to take a trip with friends,” and “wanting to be a good dad,” he obliged. “I flew down with them last night and am flying back this afternoon. My staff and I are in constant communication with state and local leaders to get to the bottom of what happened in Texas,” he said at the time. “We want our power back, our water on, and our homes warm. My team and I will continue using all our resources to keep Texans informed and safe.”

Upon landing in Houston, however, Cruz seemed more apologetic. “It was obviously a mistake and in hindsight I wouldn’t have done it,” he told reporters. “I was trying to make decisions. When you’ve got two girls who’ve been cold for two days and haven’t had heat or power and they’re saying, ‘Look we don’t have school why don’t we go, let’s get out of here.’”

The Simpsons‘ “Marge in Chains” episode is available to stream on Disney+. Or, you know, you could turn on the news for the same effect.
