Police, firefighters and paramedics have been called after a body was discovered in a canal near the centre of Leigh.

Two roads, Mather Lane and Henry Street, have been cordoned off with a large number of emergency service vehicles present.

A spokesperson for GMP said that the body of a person had been found in the water at the canal late last night.

Witnesses spotted police in an area around Henry Street at around 11.30pm.

In a statement, a police spokesperson said: “Police were called at about 7am on Thursday, March 25, to reports there was a body in the Leeds and Liverpool Canal near King Street in Leigh.

“GMFRS, NWAS and a GMP underwater search team attended and remain at the scene.”

Sections of both roads in the area area closed off, with cars unable to pass.

But, the canal bridge at Mather Lane is still open.
