This is a model but I chose it as the colour is the closest I can find to the real thing. Many other examples look like they’re heading to “Pride”
Its a special shade of off-white / pale pink. Not nearly as pink as used in desert vehicles. Any modeller using the same paint as for an SAS Landrover or Gulf War Tornado is wrong.
It was specifically chosen for low level recon missions at dusk and dawn where this shade was found to blend into the sky more effectively than other colours. Not many photo-recon spits did LOW LEVEL photo recon which is the other reason I chose this model. Note the 20mm cannon barrels as well as the camera on the left side next to the fuselage roundel.
These are the guys who spotted the SS Panzers at Arnhem. Basically they went in at tree top height and took the pics more or less level with the tanks! Most photo recon spits were unarmed, high altitude specialists but the Arnhem ones (flown by no 16 Squadron I believe) carried full standard Spit IX armament.
Most PIR Spits were a faded blue.
