Arsenal have completed the signing of 21-year-old Portuguese defender Nuno Tavares from Benfica.

Tavares, who has made 25 appearances for Benfica, has also been capped from U18-U21 level for his national team.

And he becomes the Gunners’ first new man through the door this summer, and is expected to cost around €8m (£6.8m) plus add-ons.

Technical director Edu said: “Nuno is a talented young player who was wanted by a number of clubs across Europe. He will provide strong back-up in the left-back position. We look forward to him growing and developing with us and becoming an important member of the first-team squad.”

Manager Mikel Arteta, meanwhile, added: “We welcome Nuno to the club. He is a young player with great promise who has developed very well with Benfica in recent seasons and has also shown his quality by being part of Portugal Under-21s.

“Nuno’s arrival will give the squad extra strength and options in defence, particularly with this energy on the left side of the pitch. We look forward to Nuno’s arrival soon, his integration into the Arsenal family and playing in front of our fantastic supporters.”0:000:30

The Gunners pursued him after considering Ryan Bertrand, but the former England international, who has left Southampton after seeing his contract expire, looks set to join Leicester on a free transfer.

Signing a left-back has been a priority for Arteta and sporting director Edu ever since the January transfer window, when they allowed Sead Kolasinac to rejoin Schalke on loan – while also sending Ainsley Maitland-Niles, to West Brom.

Arsenal are busy in the market this summer as they are also pursuing a move for Sheffield United keeper Aaron Ramsdale and are closing in on Anderlecht midfielder Sambi Lokonga.

Brighton and England defender Ben White is also high on their list of priorities, while they are continuing to attempt to fend off Aston Villa’s advances for Emile Smith Rowe.

The England Under-21 international is wanted by the Villans, but Arsenal are hoping to sign him to a new contract.FollowAdd CommentMORE STORIESRevealed: The Benefit Anyone Can ClaimREASSURED|SponsoredUK Seniors Born 1940 – 1970 Can Claim This Brilliant New BenefitPEACE OF MIND|SponsoredMORE ON
