There are few ghost stories as terrifying as the Enfield Poltergeist.

Furniture would suddenly move across rooms, voices would be heard and children were even reported to be levitating in an 18 month period between 1977 and 1979.

Over 30 people including police officers, neighbours, psychic researchers and journalists reported a supernatural sighting at 284 Green Street in Enfield.

Peggy Hodgson, her children and other eyewitnesses saw and heard moving furniture, flying objects, unexplained knocking noises and even levitation. The activity was centred on two of the four children in the house: Janet, 11, and Margaret, 13.

It was even reported a deceased former resident at the North London house took possession of Janet and spoke through her.

Janet was even reported to hover several feet off the ground and would speak in possessed voices.

One of the voices Janet used she called Bill and she uttered the terrifying words to onlookers: “Just before I died, I went blind, and then I had a haemorrhage and I fell asleep and I died in the chair in the corner downstairs.” were seen floating in the children’s bedroom in Enfield(Image: Graham Morris)

Bill is thought to be Bill Wilkins, a former resident at the address who died several years before Janet’s possession.

Speaking to Radio 4 in 2018 Janet recalled the experience.

She said: “I was used and abused – there was levitation, there was the voices and then there was… the curtain that wrapped itself around my neck, which was quite life-threatening for me, and it brought it home to me – that this could kill you.”

The tale has been considered so haunted it has since been dramatised in TV series such as The Enfield Haunting and films like The Conjuring 2.The family were terrorised for 18 months(Image: Graham Morris)

Peggy Hodgson never moved out of the house until she died in 2003. So who lives in the house now and is it still haunted?

MyLondon went looking for answers.

‘It used to be haunted but not anymore’

As we approached the front door there was no noise from the house and the door knocker seemed to echo through its empty halls.

However, about 10 minutes later a woman peeped round the window of the property.

The resident confirmed to MyLondon the house used to be haunted but explained it wasn’t anymore.

“It used to be,” she explained. “But not anymore.”

With that confirmation the window was slammed shut and the house fell silent again.Green Street in Enfield is regularly visited by ghost hunters looking for the Enfield Poltergeist(Image: Grahame Larter)

A neighbour told us he understood why the house was haunted.

“I understand why it could be haunted,” explained 19-year-old Gem who lives next door to the haunted house.

“It does look creepy and on days where it’s foggy I understand why it could be haunted.”

The media student explained groups of ghost hunters and film fanatics often come and visit the house.

Film crews and newsrooms also regularly appear in front of the famous home.

“My sister pranked them once,” continued Gem, who has lived next door to the haunted house for two years. “She slammed the door and (the group of ghost tourists) thought it was a ghost and all ran away.”

The student also explained there is no supernatural feeling on the road usually.

“I completely forgot that I moved next to a haunted house,” he added. “I was only reminded when people came and took photos and I wondered what they were doing. My dad then told me.”

What happened to the ghost?

There has been a lot of speculation around the ghost and whether it existed.

One claim put to Janet by Radio 4 was that she may have had Tourette’s Syndrome.

However the victim of the hauntings rejected that claim. She said: “I don’t care what they think, I know what happened and I know it was real.”

What happened to the Enfield Poltergeist still remains unclear. However, at some point since then it seems Janet was no longer possessed.

Whether the ghost existed or may still be trapped inside the property remains unknown.
